RESUMO

Bone quality is a critical factor that, along with bone quantity, determines bone strength. Image-based parameters are used for assessing bone quality non-invasively. The trabecular bone score (TBS) is used to assess quality of trabecular bone and femur geometry for cortical bone. Little is known about the associations between these two bone quality parameters and whether they show differences in the relationships with age and body mass index (BMI). We investigated the associations between the trabecular bone score (TBS) and femur cortical geometry. Areal bone mineral density (BMD) was assessed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and the TBS was assessed using iNsight software and, femur geometry using APEX (Hologic). A total of 452 men and 517 women aged 50 years and older with no medical history of a condition affecting bone metabolism were included. Z-scores for TBS and cortical thickness were calculated using the age-specific mean and SD for each parameter. A 'discrepancy group' was defined as patients whose absolute Z-score difference between TBS and cortical thickness was > 1 point. TBS and cortical thickness correlated negatively with age both in men and women, but the associations were stronger in women. Regarding the associations with BMI, TBS provided significant negative correlation with BMI in the range of BMI > 25 kg/m2. By contrast, cortical thickness correlated positively with BMI for all BMI ranges. These bone quality-related parameters, TBS and cortical thickness, significantly correlated, but discordance between these two parameters was observed in about one-third of the men and women (32.7% and 33.4%, respectively). Conclusively, image-based bone quality parameters for trabecular and cortical bone exhibit both similarities and differences in terms of their associations with age and BMI. These different profiles in TBS and FN cortical thickness might results in different risk profiles for the vertebral fractures or hip fractures in a certain percentage of people.

Healthy hip abductor muscles are a good indicator of a healthy hip and an active lifestyle, as they are greatly involved in human daily activities. Fatty infiltration and muscle atrophy are associated with loss of strength, loss of mobility and hip disease. However, these variables have not been widely studied in this muscle group. We aimed to characterize the hip abductor muscles in a group of healthy individuals to establish reference values for volume, intramuscular fat content and shape of this muscle group. To achieve this, we executed a cross-sectional study using Dixon MRI scans of 51 healthy subjects. We used an automated segmentation method to label GMAX, GMED, GMIN and TFL muscles, measured normalized volume (NV) using lean body mass, fat fraction (FF) and lean muscle volume for each subject and computed non-parametric statistics for each variable grouped by sex and age. We measured these variables for each axial slice and created cross-sectional area and FF axial profiles for each muscle. Finally, we generated sex-specific atlases with FF statistical images. We measured median (IQR) NV values of 12.6 (10.8-13.8), 6.3 (5.6-6.7), 1.6 (1.4-1.7) and 0.8 (0.6-1.0) cm3 /kg for GMAX, GMED, GMIN and TFL, and median (IQR) FF values of 12.3 (10.1-15.9)%, 9.8 (8.6-11.2)%, 10.0 (9.0-12.0)% and 10.2 (7.8-13.5)% respectively. FF values were significantly higher for females for the four muscles (p < 0.01), but there were no significant differences between the two age groups. When comparing individual muscles, we observed a significantly higher FF in GMAX than in the other muscles. The reported novel reference values and axial profiles for volume and FF of the hip abductors, together with male and female atlases, are tools that could potentially help to quantify and detect early the deteriorating effects of hip disease or sarcopenia.

CONTEXT: The relation between the menopause transition (MT) and changes in regional fat distribution is uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the MT is associated with the development of central adiposity. DESIGN: Longitudinal analysis from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, spanning 1996-2013 (median follow-up 11.8 years). SETTING: Community-based. PARTICIPANTS: 380 women with regional body composition measures by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Mean baseline age was 45.7 years; racial/ethnic composition was 16% Black, 41% Japanese and 43% White. OUTCOMES: Changes in android, gynoid and visceral fat and waist and hip circumferences. RESULTS: Android fat increased by 1.21% per year (py) and 5.54% py during premenopause and the MT, respectively (each P < 0.05). Visceral and gynoid fat began increasing at the MT, annualized changes were 6.24% and 2.03%, respectively (each P < 0.05). Postmenopausal annual trajectories decelerated to 1.47% (visceral), 0.90% (android), and -0.87% (gynoid), (all non-zero, P < 0.05). Waist girth grew during premenopause (0.55% py), the MT (0.96% py), and postmenopause (0.55% py) (all non-zero, P < 0.05; not statistically different from each other). Hip girth grew during premenopause (0.20% py) and the MT (0.35% py) (each non-zero, P < 0.05; not statistically different from each other) and decelerated to zero slope in postmenopause. Results are for the White referent; there were statistically significant differences in some trajectories in Black and Japanese women. CONCLUSIONS: The MT is associated with the development of central adiposity. Waist or hip circumferences are less sensitive to changes in fat distribution.

PURPOSE: Given the goal of achieving optimal correction and alignment after knee arthroplasty or high tibial osteotomy, literature focusing on the inter-individual variability of the native knee, tibia and femur with regards to the coronal or sagittal alignment is lacking. The aim of this study was to analyse normal angular values in the healthy middle-aged population and determine differences of angular values according to inter-individual features. The first hypothesis was that common morphological patterns may be identified in the healthy middle-aged non-osteoarthritic population. The second hypothesis was that high inter-individual variability exists with regards to gender, ethnicity and alignment phenotype. METHODS: A CT scan-based modelling and analysis system was used to examine the lower limb of 758 normal healthy patients (390 men, 368 women; mean age 58.5 ± 16.4 years) with available data concerning angular values and retrieved from the SOMA database. The hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), posterior distal femoral angle (PDFA), posterior proximal tibial angle (PPTA) and non weight-bearing joint line convergence angle (nwJLCA) were then measured for each patient. Results were analysed for the entire cohort and based on gender, ethnicity and phenotype. RESULTS: The mean HKA was 179.4° ± 2.6°, LDFA: 85.8° ± 2.0°, MPTA: 85.6° ± 2.4°, PDFA: 85.2° ± 1.5°, PPTA: 83.8° ± 2.9° and nwJLCA: 1.09° ± 0.9°. Gender was associated with higher LDFA and lower HKA for men. Ethnicity was associated with greater proximal tibial vara and distal femoral valgus for Asian patients. Patients with an overall global varus alignment had more tibia vara and less femoral valgus than patients with an overall valgus alignment. CONCLUSION: Even if significant differences were found based on subgroup analysis (gender, ethnicity or phenotype), this study demonstrated that neutral alignment is the main morphological pattern in the healthy middle-aged population. This neutrality is the result from tibia vara compensated by an ipsilateral femoral valgus. LEVEL OF CLINICAL EVIDENCE: III, retrospective cohort study.

Improper medio-lateral distance between the feet in cycling can increase the risk of injuries and decrease performance due to hip/knee/ankle misalignment in the frontal plane. The objective of this study was to measure the impact of pedal spacing changes during pedalling on the biomechanical, physiological, and subjective variables of people with different morphologies. Twenty-two cyclists were divided into two groups according to their pelvis width (narrow and wide). They performed four submaximal pedalling tests with different pedal spindle lengths (+20 mm, +40 mm, and +60 mm compared to the pedal spindle lengths of standard road bikes). EMG activity, 3D joint kinematics of the lower limbs, comfort, and perceived exertion were measured during each test. Moreover, gas exchange data were collected to measure gross mechanical efficiency and cycling economy. No significant differences in muscular activity or joint kinematics were observed among the four experimental conditions. However, gross mechanical efficiency, cycling economy, and perceived comfort significantly improved while perceived exertion significantly reduced with the narrowest pedal spacing for the whole population, as well as for the narrow and wide pelvis groups. Therefore, the lowest medio-lateral distance between the feet seems more suitable for comfort and performance improvement, irrespective of the individual's morphology.

AbstractPurpose: Previous research has captured point estimates for population means of somatic variables associated with swimming speed across strokes, but have not determined if predictors of swimming speed operate the same at the upper tails of the distribution (τ = 0.9) as they do at the median levels (τ = 0.5) and lower levels (τ = 0.1). Method: Three hundred sixty-three competitive-level swimmers (male [n = 202]; female [n = 161]) participated in the study. To identify key somatic variables associated with 100-m swimming across and between strokes controlling for age, we used a Bayesian allometric quantile regression model, refined using Bayes Factors and Leave-one-out cross validation. Results: High probabilities (>99%) were found for arm-span, seated-height and shoulder-breadth being the strongest somatic predictors across strokes. For individual strokes, Bayesian quantile regression demonstrated that the relative importance of predictors differs across quantiles. For swimmers in the 0.9 quartile, shoulder-breadth is a more important than height for front-crawl, wide shoulders are important for breaststroke swimmers but can be detrimental when combined with narrow hips, seated-height and hip-width are important for backstroke swimming speed, and calf girth for butterfly. Conclusion: These results highlight the importance of considering key somatic variables for talent identification in swimming and ensure young swimmers focus on strokes compatible with their somatic structure. The most important new insight is that predictors differ for the best swimmers compared to average or poorer swimmers. This has implications beyond swimming, pointing to the importance of considering the upper tails of distributions in performance and talent identification contexts.

PURPOSE: There are few papers investigating the morphometry of hip muscles and reporting either a single muscle or a group of synergistic muscles. With the development of hip joint simulation, hip arthroplasty implants, and gait analysis, a set of biometric data covering all the muscles that act on the hip joint is needed. METHODS: Using a rigorous dissection process on 18 cadaveric hips, measurements of all 24 hip muscles and bone parameters were conducted. We measured the following: (a) total femur, femoral shaft, and neck lengths, (b) total muscle lengths, (c) intra-muscular and extra-muscular (free) tendon lengths, (d) bone angles, (e) muscle pennation, sagittal, and frontal angles, (f) muscle weight, (g) muscle volume, (h) muscle cross-sectional area, and (i) and bending moment. Data on more than 12,000 morphometric or anatomical parameters were collected. Correlation values between bone variables, muscle variables, and in-between muscle variables were computed. Based on their compliance, muscles were classified using the ratio of belly length over the sum of intra-muscular and free tendons. RESULTS: Values of the neck, shaft, and total femur lengths were highly correlated in relation to each other. The long muscles and the pelvitrochanteric muscles were highly correlated with femoral bone lengths. The proximal and distal intra-muscular tendon lengths were correlated to the total muscle length for all long muscles, independently of free tendon (extra-muscular) or muscle belly lengths. A very significant correlation was found between muscle weight variations among specimens. Three groups of muscles were identified based on their compliance. CONCLUSION: This is the first comprehensive anatomical morphometric study which includes all the 24 muscles acting on the hip joint. It generates a unique anatomical dataset comprising all necessary data for musculoskeletal modeling and arthroplasty implants of the hip joint. A new muscle classification was proposed based on compliance where muscles of the same group would exhibit similar compliance and functional anatomy.

INTRODUCTION: Introduction: resistant arterial hypertension (HAR) is associated with a high risk for cardiovascular events due to oxidative stress. Research has shown the beneficial effects of dietary antioxidants on cardiovascular health. Objective: to analyze and correlate the biochemical, anthropometric profile and intake of antioxidant micronutrients of patients with HAR. Material and methods: the patients underwent a biochemical assessment, and an anthropometric assessment to calculate body mass index (IMC), waist circumference (PCI), hip circumference (PCA), waist-to-hip ratio (ICC), and micronutrient intake assessment: vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and zinc, estimated by a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and 24-hour recall. The statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS Statistics 20 software. A p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: sixty individuals with HAR were studied, with a mean age of 62.83 ± 10.73 years. Mean IMC was 31.01 ± 5.60 kg/m², PCI, 98.12 ± 15.04 cm, PCA, 110.55 ± 13.16 cm, and ICC, 0.879 ± 0.084. Regarding the biochemical profile, mean total colesterol was 187.65 ± 48.29 mg/dL, triglycerides, 136.38 ± 99.91 mg/dL; HDL-col, 49.00 ± 10.99 mg/dL; LDL-col, 112.01 ± 41.89 mg/dL; glucose, 105.37 ± 14.81 mg/dL, and glycated hemoglobin, 6.29 ± 1.76 %. The average daily intake of antioxidants was: vitamin A, 241.47 ± 191.87 µg/d; vitamin C, 147.02 ± 192.94 mg/d; vitamin E, 1.99 ± 1.82 mg/d; selenium, 36.80 ± 34.56 µg/d, and zinc, 99.91 ± 6.64 mg/d, where 91.38 %, 46.55 %, 93.10 %, 67.24 %, and 46.55 % of the sample were below the recommended intakes, respectively. Conclusion: inadequate antioxidant intake was observed in these patients with HAR, with a high prevalence of obesity, especially visceral adiposity and alterations in lipid profile, conditions that require a greater usage of these micronutrients. We suggest there is a need for dietary planning for these patients to improve their quality of life and their response to antihypertensive treatment.


INTRODUCCIÓN: Introducción: la hipertensión arterial resistente (HAR) se asocia a un alto riesgo de eventos cardiovasculares debido al estrés oxidativo. Los estudios han demostrado los efectos beneficiosos de los antioxidantes dietéticos sobre la salud cardiovascular. Objetivo: analizar y correlacionar el perfil bioquímico y antropométrico, y la ingesta de micronutrientes antioxidantes en pacientes con HAR. Material y métodos: los pacientes se sometieron a una evaluación bioquímica y antropométrica para calcular el índice de masa corporal (IMC), el perímetro de la cintura (PCI), el perímetro de la cadera (PCA), el índice cintura-cadera (ICC) y la ingesta de micronutrientes ­vitaminas A, C y E, selenio y zinc­ utilizando una encuesta de frecuencia de consumo alimentario y el recordatorio de 24 horas. El análisis estadístico se realizó utilizando el software SPSS Statistics 20, con un valor de p < 0,05 como significativo. Resultados: estudiamos a 60 individuos con HAR de 62,83 ± 10,73 años. El IMC medio fue de 31,01 ± 5,60 kg/m²; el PCI de 98,12 ± 15,04 cm, el PCA de 110,55 ± 13,16 cm y el ICC de 0,879 ± 0,084. Respecto al perfil bioquímico, el colesterol total medio fue de 187,65 ± 48,29 mg/dL, los triglicéridos de 136,38 ± 99,91 mg/dL, el HDL-col de 49,00 ± 10,99 mg/dL, el LDL-col de 112,01 ± 41,89 mg/dL, la glucemia de 105,37 ± 14,81 mg/dL y la hemoglobina glucosilada del 6,29 ± 1,76 %. La ingesta de antioxidantes fue: vitamina A: 241,47 ± 191,87 µg/d; vitamina C: 147,02 ± 192,94 mg/d; vitamina E: 1,99 ± 1,82 mg/d; selenio: 36,80 ± 34,56 µg/d, y zinc: 9,91 ± 6,64 mg/d, y el 91,38 %, 46,55 %, 93,10 %, 67,24 % y 46,55 % de la muestra se encontraron por debajo de lo recomendado, respectivamente. Conclusión: se observó una ingesta insuficiente de antioxidantes en los pacientes con HAR, que presentan una alta prevalencia de obesidad, especialmente de adiposidad visceral y alteraciones del perfil lipídico, afecciones que requieren un mayor uso de estos micronutrientes. Se sugiere la necesidad de una planificación dietética dirigida a estos pacientes para mejorar la calidad de vida y la respuesta al tratamiento antihipertensivo.

It is widely accepted that canine breeds stand and move differently. The prevalence of various musculoskeletal disorders such as hip and elbow dysplasia is also different between breeds. German shepherd dog (GSD) and Labrador retriever dog (LRD) are two large breeds with different conformations that have high prevalence of these disorders. This study quantifies the movement and standing posture of twelve healthy GSDs and twelve healthy LRDs to identify biomechanical similarities and differences that may be linked to sub-optimal hip and elbow mechanics. A pressure walkway and a motion capture system obtained measures of kinetics, kinematics and conformation during standing and trot. During standing, LRDs carry a greater percentage of the weight on the forelimbs (69%±5% vs. GSDs: 62%±2%, p<0.001) and their body Centre of Pressure (CoP) is located more cranially (p<0.001). GSDs had a greater pelvic tilt (79°±8 vs. 66°±9°, p = 0.004), more flexed stifles (44°±9° vs. LRDs: 34°±10°, p<0.05) and hocks (58°±11° vs. 26°±9°, p<0.01) and more extended hips (-10°±11° vs. 30°±12°, p<0.001). During trot, the GSDs' CoP had a longer anterior-posterior trajectory (151%±22% vs. LRDs: 93%±25% of the withers height, p<0.001). Stride parameters and loading of limbs were similar when normalised to the size and weight of the dog, respectively. The LRDs had a more extended thoracolumbar angle (p<0.001) and a less flexed lumbosacral angle (p<0.05). The LRDs' hip remained flexed during trot whereas the GSDs' hip joint was less flexed during swing (p<0.001) and more extended in late stance and early swing (p<0.001). In conclusion, the LRDs and GSDs differ in the way they stand and move and this would result in different loading pattern of the joints. Further investigation is required to determine the extent to which biomechanical differences are linked to musculoskeletal problems presented clinically.

CONTEXT: Among patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D), the risk of hip fracture is up to 6-fold greater than that of the general population. However, the cause of this skeletal fragility remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To assess differences in hip geometry and imaging-based estimates of bone strength between youth with and without T1D using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-based hip structural analysis. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison. PARTICIPANTS: Girls ages 10 to 16 years, including n = 62 with T1D and n = 61 controls. RESULTS: The groups had similar age, bone age, pubertal stage, height, lean mass, and physical activity. Bone mineral density at the femoral neck and total hip did not differ in univariate comparisons but was lower at the femoral neck in T1D after adjusting for bone age, height, and lean mass. Subjects with T1D had significantly lower cross-sectional area, cross-sectional moment of inertia, section modulus, and cortical thickness at the narrow neck, with deficits of 5.7% to 10.3%. Cross-sectional area was also lower at the intertrochanteric region in girls with T1D. Among those T1D subjects with HbA1c greater than the cohort median of 8.5%, deficits in hip geometry and strength estimates were more pronounced. CONCLUSIONS: DXA-based hip structural analysis revealed that girls with T1D have unfavorable geometry and lower estimates of bone strength at the hip, which may contribute to skeletal fragility and excess hip fracture risk in adulthood. The practice of sports during the growth phase has a positive influence on bone mineral accrual. However, the effects of different sports are still not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bone geometry in adolescent handball players. This is a cross-sectional study in which 53 female adolescents (12-17 years old) were divided into two groups: handball players (HG: n = 26), who must have had at least six months of participation in official competitions, and a control group (CG: n = 27). Bone geometry properties, such as cross-sectional area (CSA), cross-sectional moment of inertia (CSMI), section modulus (Z), and femoral strength index (FSI) were measured using DXA. Tanner's sexual maturity, menarche, peak height velocity, sun exposure, and calcium intake were assessed. An unpaired Student's t test or the Mann-Whitney test and multivariate analyzes were used to compare variables differences between groups. The HG group showed a significantly higher body mass index, weight and lean mass (LST), CSA, CSMI, Z, and FSI than the CG group. When the values were adjusted for LST, the differences disappeared. The LST has been shown to be relevant to the strength and bone stiffness of the femurs of female adolescents, and the competitive practice in handball may have contributed to its increase.

Ultrasound of the Hip (Adapted According to SGUM Guidelines) Abstract. This review paper explains the simplified ultrasound anatomy of the hip. The adapted basic standard planes are described in detail according to SGUM guidelines and illustrated with a selection of high-resolution ultrasound images. A profound knowledge of the sonographic anatomy is essential for the detection of pathologies.

A pele de tilápia possui microbiota não infecciosa e estrutura morfológica semelhante à pele humana. Estudos clínicos fase II, ainda não publicados, mostraram resultados promissores na sua utilização para tratamento de queimaduras. Nos protocolos destes estudos, pacientes com lesões em áreas de dobras de pele, como genitais e região inguinal, foram excluídos, pois achava-se que o biomaterial não aderiria apropriadamente, resultando em um grau de cicatrização inferior. Relato de caso de paciente do sexo feminino, 18 anos, sem comorbidades, com queimaduras de segundo grau profundo em abdômen, região inguinal, parte da genitália e metade superior de ambas as coxas, envolvendo 13,5% da área total da superfície corporal. A pele de tilápia foi aplicada nas lesões levando a uma reepitelização completa com 16 dias de tratamento. Não foram observados efeitos colaterais. A pele de tilápia traz, portanto, a promessa de um produto inovador, de fácil aplicação e alta disponibilidade, que pode se tornar a primeira pele animal nacionalmente estudada e registrada pela Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, para uso no tratamento de queimaduras. Este relato de caso contribui para reduzir as limitações em relação às áreas anatômicas apropriadas para a aplicação da pele de tilápia, uma vez que, mesmo com a necessidade de reposição de pele, foram obtidos bons resultados com aplicação na genitália e região inguinal.


Tilapia skin has a non-infectious microbiota and a morphological structure similar to human skin. Phase II clinical studies, not yet published, have shown promising results in their use for the treatment of burns. In the protocols of these studies, patients with lesions in areas of skin folds, such as genitals and inguinal regions, were excluded, as it was thought that the biomaterial would not adhere properly, resulting in a lower degree of healing. Case report of a female patient, 18 years old, without comorbidities, with deep second-degree burns in the abdomen, inguinal region, part of the genitalia and upper half of both thighs, involving 13.5% of the total body surface area. Tilapia skin was applied to the lesions leading to a complete re-epithelialization with 16 days of treatment. No side effects were observed. Tilapia skin, therefore, brings the promise of an innovative product, easy to apply, and highly available, which can become the first animal skin nationally studied and registered by the Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, for use in the treatment of burns. This case report contributes to reduce the limitations concerning the anatomical areas appropriate for the application of tilapia skin, since, even with the need for skin replacement, good results were obtained with application to the genitalia and inguinal region.

Humans are the only primate that walk bipedally with adducted hips, valgus knees, and swing-side pelvic drop. These characteristic frontal-plane aspects of bipedalism likely play a role in balance and energy minimization during walking. Understanding when and why these aspects of bipedalism evolved also requires an understanding of how each of these features are interrelated during walking. Here we investigated the relationship between step width, hip adduction, and pelvic list during bipedalism by altering step widths and pelvic motions in humans in ways that both mimic chimpanzee gait as well as an exaggerated human gait. Our results show that altering either step width or pelvic list to mimic those of chimpanzees affects hip adduction, but neither of these gait parameters dramatically affects the other in ways that lead to a chimpanzee-like gait. These results suggest that the evolution of valgus knees and narrow steps in humans may be decoupled from the evolution of the human-like pattern of pelvic list. While the origin of narrow steps in hominins may be linked to minimizing energetic cost of locomotion, the origin of the human-like pattern of pelvic list remains unresolved.

The objective of the present study was to model in 3D the detailed morphometric features of the thoracic and pelvic limb bones of the gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa), whose natural habitat is only in the Sanliurfa province, by using multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) images. Materials from 14 (7 male and 7 female) dead gazelles were collected from the Harran University Veterinary Medicine Faculty clinics during or after treatment. MDCT images of the gazelles were taken and saved as DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) files. MIMICS 20.1 software was used to generate a 3D reconstruction of the data, and morphological and morphometrical evaluation was performed. In respect of morphological features, the combined metacarpus (Mc) III and metacarpus Mc IV were the main weight-bearing metacarpal bone, while Mc II and Mc V were rudimentary. On the femur, the lateral condyle was bigger than the medial condyle at the caudodistal end and the medial wing of the trochlea femoris was larger than the lateral. As with the thoracic limb, the combined metatarsus (Mt) III and metatarsus Mt IV were the main weight-bearing metacarpal bone and they displayed a synostosis structure. There was no secondary metatarsus in the gazelles' pelvic limb. Based on digital measurements, the tibia was the longest bone of the gazelles' skeletal system, and there was a statistically significant sexual dimorphism throughout the skeleton at the levels of p < .05, p < .01 and p < .001. As a result, the present study's findings are useful as reference data for further studies on anatomy, surgery and archaezoology, while also being useful for classifying species and for forensic sciences.

Purpose: This study determined the impact of menstrual status on bone tissue in elite post-pubertal female soccer players over an entire season.Methods: Fifty-one elite female soccer players participated. At baseline, forty-one were assigned to the low hormonal androgenic profile (low-HAPL) and 10 to the high hormonal androgenic profile (high-HAPL).Results: An 8-month training program led to increased bone mineral density content (p<0.05). The low-HAPL athletes improved the Narrow neck average cortical thickness (ACT) by 1.4% and reduced the corresponding Buckling ratio (BR) by 2.6%, thus decreasing the fracture risk (p<0.05). The high-HAPL athletes decreased the Narrow neck ACT by 5.4% and increased the BR by 2.6%, increasing fracture risk (p<0.05). Differences were assigned as being "very likely beneficial" for the low-HAPL athletes, supported by very large (d=3.41) and large (d=1.58) effect sizes for the Narrow neck ACT and BR, respectively.Conclusion: A season of soccer training has induced bone geometry improvements in adolescent females. Bone health parameters improved in the two clusters. However, high-HAPL athletes decreased its resistance to loading compare to low-HAPL athletes. Even if female players do not present clinical symptoms related to their hormonal status, sport medicine physicians should pay attention to their structural bone fragility.

This study identified key somatic and demographic characteristics that benefit all swimmers and, at the same time, identified further characteristics that benefit only specific swimming strokes. Three hundred sixty-three competitive-level swimmers (male [n = 202]; female [n = 161]) participated in the study. We adopted a multiplicative, allometric regression model to identify the key characteristics associated with 100 m swimming speeds (controlling for age). The model was refined using backward elimination. Characteristics that benefited some but not all strokes were identified by introducing stroke-by-predictor variable interactions. The regression analysis revealed 7 "common" characteristics that benefited all swimmers suggesting that all swimmers benefit from having less body fat, broad shoulders and hips, a greater arm span (but shorter lower arms) and greater forearm girths with smaller relaxed arm girths. The 4 stroke-specific characteristics reveal that backstroke swimmers benefit from longer backs, a finding that can be likened to boats with longer hulls also travel faster through the water. Other stroke-by-predictor variable interactions (taken together) identified that butterfly swimmers are characterized by greater muscularity in the lower legs. These results highlight the importance of considering somatic and demographic characteristics of young swimmers for talent identification purposes (i.e., to ensure that swimmers realize their most appropriate strokes).

BACKGROUND: The current study's purpose is to compare hip structural analysis variables in a group of postmenopausal women with sarcopenia and another group of postmenopausal women with normal skeletal muscle mass index. To do so, the current study included 8 postmenopausal women (whose ages ranged between 65 and 84 years) with sarcopenia and 60 age-matched controls (with normal skeletal muscle mass index (SMI)). Body composition and bone parameters were evaluated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). RESULTS: Weight, lean mass, body mass index, femoral neck cross-sectional area (FN CSA), FN section modulus (Z), FN cross sectional moment of inertia (CSMI), intertrochanteric (IT) CSA, IT Z, IT CSMI, IT cortical thickness (CT), femoral shaft (FS) CSA, FS Z and FS CSMI were significantly greater (p < 0.05) in women with normal SMI compared to women with sarcopenia. In the whole population, SMI was positively associated with IT CSA, IT Z, IT CSMI, IT CT, FS CSA, FS Z, FS CSMI, FS CT but negatively correlated to IT buckling ratio (BR) and FS BR. CONCLUSION: The current study suggests that sarcopenia has a negative effect on hip bone strength indices in postmenopausal women.
